Finding Balance On and Off the Yoga Mat

How can we strike a balance between doing too much and straining, and doing too little and feeling as if we're not working hard enough?

Life's very nature manifests itself as the fluctuating nature of light vs darkness, strength versus weakness, good versus evil. However, through yoga teachings and life lessons, we are frequently reminded that harmony is found in balance. We witness it in the cycles of the Earth and Moon, as well as the rising and falling tides of the oceans. We feel it when there are highs in our life followed by devastating lows.

There is an essential pulse to it all.

The concept of Sthira and Sukha in yogic philosophy relates to the conflicted yet harmonious characteristics of existence. These two concepts appear in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, a collection of 196 Sutras (aphorisms) on the yoga teachings and practice.
Sutra 2.46 - "sthira-sukham asanam" - relates to these concepts.
The above statement can be viewed as "postures should be firm and comfortable," as well as a balance of "commitment" and "at ease."
Sthira symbolizes consistency, purpose, and determination. Etymologically, it originates from the word stha, which meaning "to stand, to be firm".
Sukha originates from the basic words su (good) and kha (space) and means "good space," meaning to soothe, effortlessness, and spaciousness.

Sthira is the flame; the aspect of the practice that asks you to be fully present when you encounter challenges, whether it comes from the physical body or the mind. Finding stability in the body and mind when doing asana, meditation, or any other yogic practice is what will eventually bring us into balance.

You'll know you're practicing Yoga when your posture is stable, your muscles are engaged, and your breathing is regular and supportive. You develop your ability to be alert and mindful. Your body and mind are in one place only.

Sukha happens when we allow things to let go. It's the point in the practice where, as we become more at ease with ourselves, we begin to relax and become immersed in the experience without having to do more or strive harder; the law of efficiency is expressed. It is that part of ourselves that recognizes when we have "arrived" in the present. Everything seems to be in order, and there is no strain. The mind feels quiet, satisfied, and open, and prana, the life force energy, may move easily through us.

How do we live our lives in a steady attitude in which both job and leisure are proportional? Where we establish time for ourselves in relation to the time we spend doing things for others.
In the same way that we explore this duality on our yoga mats: with awareness and purpose to balance.

Picture yourself engaging in transformative experiences such as yoga and meditation, as well as taking leisurely nature walks in one of the most breathtaking landscapes in Portugal - the Serra de Aires e Candeeiros Nature Park. Here, you can discover a sense of peace, tranquility, and harmony, allowing you to return to your daily life with a renewed sense of energy and determination. You will feel simultaneously rejuvenated, inspired, and relaxed.

The retreat will take place in Minde, a dreamy place amidst the nature of the Natural Park of Serra Aires e Candeeiros

The house is set in a small forest full of native species: a hundred-year old oak tree, ash trees and fig trees, in the shade of which you can relax on one of the hammocks, read a good book or listen the melodies of blackbirds, hoopoes and thrushes.  Rebuilt from a family house, it mixes the ancestral roots of a village with almost 900 years and a modern simplicity that will make you feel welcomed as if you were at home. With all the comfort and amenities it is the ideal place to nourish the body and mind.
